Chelsea Football Club has just finished the seventh signing of a Senegal national football team goalkeeper, Edouard Mendy. Historically, the 28-year-old goalkeeper from Rennes is similar to the current Technical and Performance Advisor, Petre Cech, back in the year 2004.

Mendy joined Chelsea, making it a total of seven players from their respective clubs to the Pride of London side. Other players are Kai Havertz, Malang Sarr, Thiago Silva, Ben Chilwell, Timo Werner, and Hakim Ziyech.

Peter Cech Facilitated Mendy’s Signing

According to the Chelsea Director, Marina Granovskama, Peter Cech facilitated the goalkeeper’s urge to join the blues.  Mendy joined as soon as Petre Cech and our technical committee identified him as the most suitable goalkeeper to complement their existing group. He penned down his contract as only one remaining, which the blues was in need of.

“Edouard Mendy arrived following a season of real success with Rennes, very ambitious, and we welcome to him our club,” Marina noted.

However, as such development is on course, Mendy shaded more light. According to him, “I am so excited to be joining Chelsea. It’s a dream for me to be part of this exciting squad. I am also delighted to work with Frank Lampard and all of his Coaching Staff. I look forward to meeting my teammates and can’t wait to get started,” the skilled goalkeeper siad.

A Brief History of His Football Career

Meanwhile, Mendy in football dates back to France Montivilliers at As Cherbourg in the Championnat National. It is the third tier of the French football league, which took effect in 2014.

Later, he joined Marseille, but he didn’t last careerwise since he never made any appearance. He found himself playing for Reims in 2016. There, he was the number one preferred goalkeeper in the first eleven squads attaining two titles, 24 goals for a period of three years.

However, Mendy was enthusiastic to join Rennes before the season of 2019/2020 at Roazhon Park. He recorded 13 clean sheets with goals in a total of 33 games. Also, Mendy assisted his club to secure a chance in Champions League matches. Reportedly, this happened for the first time in history before the outbreak of coronavirus put every sporting activity to a halt.

Internationally, Mendy is born of a Senegalese mother and a Guinea-Bissau father. He opted to play for a Senegal and not for his fatherland, Guinea-Bissau. He assisted Senegal to gather seven trophies. Also, Mendy made headlines after declining an invitation to a friendly match between Portugal and Guinea Bissau in 2016 and the African cups of Nations in 2017.

Mendy’s Arrival to Create Stiff Competition

Nevertheless, the current Chelsea goalkeeper, Kepa Arrizabalaga, is reportedly having sleepless nights since Mendy’s arrival. This is because there is going to be stiff competition on who to be picked on the first eleven and who is going to be used as a sub.

Earlier, there were speculations that Kepa could exit the Bridge, but that didn’t happen. Following the kick-off of the English premier league, Kepa made an unforgettable mistake in a match hosting Brighton, which they won 3-1 opening at the same time and also the loss to Liverpool at home. However, Kepa had already apologized to the Super Franc, who advised further to rebuff Kepa’s confidence.
